What Size Air Conditioner Do I Need? A Bahrain Room-by-Room Guide

, by Switch On, 2 min reading time

Work out the right AC tonnage for your room in Bahrain — 1 ton, 1.5, 2 or 2.5 — and why inverter matters when you cool eight months a year.

Buying an air conditioner one size wrong is expensive in both directions, and in Bahrain you find out quickly. Here is how to get it right the first time.

The short answer

Room Rough area Tonnage
Bedroom, small office up to 150 sq ft 1 ton
Standard bedroom, small living room 150–200 sq ft 1.5 ton
Large living room 200–300 sq ft 2 ton
Majlis, open-plan living 300–400 sq ft 2.5 ton
Large majlis, high ceiling 400+ sq ft 3 ton or two units

Why guessing costs you twice

An undersized unit never reaches the temperature you set. It runs continuously through a Bahrain August, you pay for every hour of it, and the room still feels warm.

An oversized unit has the opposite problem. It cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has pulled any humidity out, leaving the room cold and clammy. That short-cycling also wears the compressor faster.

Four things that change the answer

Sun exposure

A room with west-facing windows takes the afternoon sun for hours. Add roughly half a ton over the table above.

Ceiling height

The table assumes a standard ceiling. A majlis with a high or double-height ceiling holds far more air than its floor area suggests.

How many people use it

A bedroom for one and a majlis that seats twelve are different cooling problems at the same square footage.

Which floor you are on

A top-floor flat takes heat through the roof all day. A ground-floor room with rooms above it does not.

Inverter or not

In a climate that needs cooling eight months a year this is not a close call. A non-inverter compressor is either fully on or fully off. An inverter modulates, running slower once the room is at temperature instead of stopping and starting.

It holds temperature more steadily and uses materially less electricity, and that saving compounds every month you run it — which here is most of them. If you are choosing between a larger non-inverter and a correctly sized inverter at the same price, take the inverter.

Rotary or inverter compressor

You will see both on the shelf. Rotary is the older, cheaper, fixed-speed design. Inverter costs more up front and returns it in running cost. For a room you cool daily, choose inverter. For a guest room used twice a year, rotary is defensible.
