How to choose: Air Fryers

Air fryers and multi-cookers from Black & Decker, Philips, Zen, Midea and Clikon.

Capacity is the decision most people get wrong. A 4-litre basket feeds one or two. A family needs 7 litres or more, and a dual-basket model if you want two things cooking at different temperatures — which in practice is most weeknight meals.

Basket shape matters as much as volume. A wide, shallow basket cooks more evenly than a deep narrow one of the same litreage, because air needs to move around the food.

Check whether the basket is dishwasher safe and whether the non-stick coating is guaranteed. That coating is what determines whether you still like the machine in two years.
